Ahsan urges to promote research, innovation in universities for academia, industry linkage

ISLAMABAD, Jan 10 (APP):Minister for Interior, Planning, Development and Reforms, Professor Ahsan Iqbalon Wednesday urged to promote research and innovation in universities and enhance the academia industry's linkages.

Universities must produce future leaders and engaging in community development for economic development and prosperity of the country, he said while addressing as chief guest in report launching

of Agha Khan University on economic Impact in Pakistan.

Individuals from government, the diplomatic corps, international funding agencies and civil society joined the University at the launch of the report today in Islamabad, including the Chief Guest, Professor Ahsan Iqbal, Minister for Interior, Planning, Development & Reform. "This economic impact study by the Aga Khan University is a trendsetter for our education

sector," Minister Iqbal said.

"AKU has continued its reputation of being a model of excellence in higher education by showing

us another way to assess, evaluate and hold accountable our higher education institutions."

He said that Universities must connect with the society to uplift the marginalized segment of the society.

The Minister said that education is biggest weapon for social mobilization and major source inclusive development.

Ahsan Iqbal said the government has ended load shedding and minimsed the menace of terrorism for providing conducive environment for economic development in the country.

The minister said that now country has record Gross Domestic Production (GDP) growth in last ten years and "We expects 6 % GDP growth in this fiscal year.

President and CEO of AKU, Firoz Rasul said the Aga Khan University in results of a landmark

study found that AKU has an annual economic impact in Pakistan of Rs 103 billion, or US$ 1 billion, supporting 42,000 jobs.

He said the study reports also reveals that AKU's spending has a multiplier effect, with every rupee of its direct gross value added generating Rs 7.3 in economic benefits.

The study demonstrates that AKU has a major impact as a leader that improves quality of life in Pakistan, whether by raising standards in health care and education, empowering women or conducting cutting-edge research."
